Why is Cyber Security Important for Media Companies?

Over the years, media companies have witnessed an increase in the number of cyber attacks. As the attacks become widespread, what strikes is the complexity of these attacks.

Given the increasing sophistication of such breaches, media companies should implement measures to mitigate the risks attached to cyber crime.

One of the reasons why media companies overlook the benefits of cybersecurity is because they are not aware of the cyber risks around them. Since the business environment today is fundamentally reliant on digital means for connectivity, companies need to protect the data that floats through their clouds.

This is true for media companies too. The increasing cyber threats may hinder the progress of the media companies, as the media industry looks to transition from the cable cord to over-the-top content (OTT). This means that media companies provide users with online shows and information on different social media platforms.

Kinds of Cyber Threats in Media Organizations

Media organizations face a completely different set of threats in the industry. The top security breaches against the media industry include the SQL injections. An SQL injection is a technique of injecting a code that contains malicious SQL statements that are inserted in an entry field.

21% of attacks are DNS based, which exploits the vulnerabilities in the domain name system of the owner. This can hijack the website, the credentials, and the details of the site fall back with the owner.

Why is Cyber Security Important?

The effect of cyber attack on a company is well-documented. The economic damage and the loss of reputation are some factors that you cannot overlook when planning your cybersecurity. The theft of corporate information or the disruption of day-to-day operations can bring a business to a standstill. This can damage the reputation of a media company and lead to a significant reduction in profits.

Businesses that are affected by cyber-attacks need to spend a significant proportion of the income for the recovery phase. Since the digital realm also involves financial detail of a business, media companies stand the risk of losing their finances.

Not to forget the legal consequences and the requirements that all businesses are required to uphold regarding their customers and staff. If the cyber breach ends up compromising the data from the team, you may face fines and regulatory sanctions from the courts.

To mitigate the risks attached to a cyber breach, it is imperative to create a setup that is in perfect harmony. You also need to devise a team that can clean up all the affected systems and ensures that the media company is up and running in the shortest possible time.

Conclusion

As the dangers and risks associated with cybersecurity become common, companies are using methods to prevent the damages attached. Cybersecurity is as critical as physical security, and as a media company, you should be looking for ways to mitigate the risks.
